Choosing Wisely Australia is an initiative from medical colleges, societies and NPS MedicineWise encouraging the community, clinicians and consumers to start important conversations about unnecessary tests, treatments and procedures. It is not easy to always communicate with health professionals, especially those you don't know well, the Choosing Wisely web-site provides suggestions and tips for your appointment.

There are Five Questions to ask your GP, Specialist or other health care provider before getting a test, treatment or procedure to result in the right amount of care and limit harm.

1. Do I really need this test or procedure?

Tests may help diagnose the problem and procedures may help in treatment and management

2. What are the risks?

will there be side-effects, what are the chances of getting inaccurate results, could that lead to further testing or procedures?

3. Are there simpler, safer options?

There are times that lifestyle changes such as adding exercise and healthy eating may be more effective than medication

4. What happens if I don't do anything?

Check whether your condition may resolve with time or progress

5. What are the costs?

The costs include financial, emotional and time to you and the community
