Relay for Life is the Cancer Council's signature community event to raise funds for research, support services and advocacy. All the money raised is used to support cancer survivors, carers and families. The funds are used in providing research in improving detection and treatment, prevention strategies and education, and support for those affected by cancer. . The Cancer Council is a community funded, community focused charity for all cancers, including the rare and less researched cancers .

All the risks and causes of cancer are unknown, but there are a number of chemical, physical and biological agents that have been demonstrated as triggering changes in cells that cause cancer. The well known carcinogens are tobacco, asbestos and UV radiation.

Many cancers have shared risk factors :

  • One in nine cancers are due to smoking
  • Alcohol consumption is related to approx. 3% of cancers
  • Many cancers are a result of dietary influences ( such as smoked meats), infectious agents or radiation exposure
  • Some cancers result from faulty inherited genes
  • Cancer can develop without any specific cause or trigger
  • Cancer is not caused by stress or injury

There are simple steps provided by the Cancer Council that can be taken towards reducing your individual risk of developing cancer:

  • Quit smoking
  • Eat healthily
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Be sunsmart
  • Limit alcohol
  • Move your body more
  • Participate in screening programs and get checked if there are changes or symptoms to your body and health, such as ulcers that don't heal, moles that alter, blood in bowel motions, urinary problems, coughs that don't settle, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain or bloating, new lumps.
