Simple steps can make a difference to living a more healthy and happy life. Men's Health Week again has a focus on prevention, early detection and education.

Some simple steps towards this goal are:

  • Learn about your family history, your genes can influence your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, some forms of cancer, diabetes and some forms of mental health problems.
  • Don't smoke
  • Eat a healthy diet, fill up with vegetables and fruit, whole grains and healthy proteins. Limit saturated and trans-fats, salt and added sugar. Drink water.
  • Move
  • Take action early, if you are experiencing a health issue, find time and make an appointment with your doctor
  • Sleep well, sleep quality affects your appetite, your metabolism, your immune system and ability to cope with stress.
  • Keep an audit of your health numbers :  body mass index, waistline, blood pressure, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, blood sugar
  • Manage your stress
  • Limit alcohol. Try to give yourself alcohol free days every week.
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Visit the dentist regularly.  Low-grade inflammation associated with plaque build up has been shown to increase heart attack risk.
  • Get active and connect with the people around you at work, home and socially. Work on improving your mental health and wellbeing to cope with times that do not go well.
  • Smile
