Each year the AMA reminds the community of the vital role played by local family doctors in keeping Australians healthy. The AMA President will deliver an address to the National Press Club as part of the week in support of general practice and promoting the importance of the GP's role to the community

Those who have an ongoing relationship with a family doctor have been shown to have better health outcomes. GPs manage 90% of the problems they encounter in a consult and 85% of the population visit a GP at least once per year.

A trusted relationship with your GP allows open and honest discussions about health care concerns, risk factors, preventive measures, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, ongoing management and end of life care. General practitioners are the only medical professionals specifically trained for and skilled in comprehensive first contact and continuing care for people with any undiagnosed sign, symptoms or health concern.
